Amethyst

Seperate points
Location: South Brazil

Amethyst is the purple or violet gemstone from the quartz family. The attractive colour is created by iron and manganese oxides.
The hollow spaces in which amethyst occurs are called "geodes". These geodes are found in the huge basalt layer in the south of Rio Grande do Sul (South Brazil) and Uruguay. In a volcanic process about 50-80 million years ago, liquid magma penetrated the basalt layer and filled the hollow spaces. Because the cooling went relatively slowly and gradually, beautiful crystals were formed at temperatures between 80 and 100 degrees Celsius of which we have perfect examples. Not sharpened, pure nature!

The name amethyst is derived from the Greek A-methyl which means "anti-alcohol" and finds its origin in the old superstition that its wearer is protected against drunkenness.
Amethyst is a very spiritual stone. The manganese stimulates creativity, visualization and spiritual development. It is the stone that symbolizes the connection of the earthly with the highest spiritual power.
