Over the course of centuries the wood cells have been replaced by quartz crystals. The structure, including the annual rings, will be retained. Petrification is possible if wood is quickly closed off from the outside air under certain circumstances, so that rotting does not stand a chance. Sometimes the crystal structure of petrified wood is influenced by metal oxides, in this case iron oxide, resulting in the beautiful red color in this piece.

Petrified wood is found worldwide. Besides Madagascar, the United States and Indonesia are other important locations.
